Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
